Medical Nutrition Therapy (MNT) is a clinical, evidence-based approach that uses targeted nutrition interventions to treat specific health conditions like diabetes, heart disease, obesity, and kidney disease.

Unlike general nutrition counseling—which supports overall wellbeing and lifestyle changes—MNT is designed to address medical diagnoses with tailored nutrition strategies that support healing, balance, and prevention.

What is Medical Nutrition Therapy?

Whether you're looking to manage a condition or stay ahead of one, your care plan will always be personalized, compassionate, and sustainable—never restrictive or one-size-fits-all.

What is the Difference Between a Registered Dietitian and a Nutritionist?

Not all nutrition professionals are created equal. While the terms may sound similar, only Registered Dietitians (RD or RDN) are licensed, clinically trained, and qualified to provide personalized nutrition care—especially when it comes to managing medical conditions.

To earn the RD/RDN credential, a practitioner must:

  • Complete a Master’s degree in nutrition or a related field

  • Fulfill at least 1200 hours of supervised clinical training

  • Pass a national board exam

  • Stay current through ongoing continuing education

Registered Dietitians are the only nutrition professionals legally recognized to prescribe medical nutrition therapy and create individualized nutrition plans for diagnosed conditions.

In contrast, anyone can call themselves a “nutritionist.” Most nutritionists or health coaches:

  • Are not required to complete formal education or clinical training

  • Do not take a licensing exam or maintain continuing education

  • Cannot legally prescribe therapeutic diets or practice medical nutrition therapy
